Joyce Johnston, 80,from Huyton was stirred by the rumbling of an outside stone wall crashing down in the middle of the night – but thought nothing of it and quickly fell asleep again.
And when she woke the next morning she was shocked to find her utility room and part of her bathroom had crumbled to bits and fallen into her garden.
Joyce, of Stocknridge Village , Huyton, said: “I was in bed, half asleep, when I heard a rumbling sound at the back of the house. I just went back to sleep – you get used to odd noises in my old house.
“But when I got up in the morning I saw what had happened and almost collapsed myself.
“It’s my worst nightmare come true, I was shaking like a leaf.
The retired tailor – who created the knight costumes for cult film Monty Python and the Holy Grail – says her son Thomas and other pals have rallied round to help her since the disaster.
She said: “They have been calling to make sure I’m OK.
“I’m well known in the village. Most people know me as the woman who made the costumes for Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
“I made the knights’ costumes worn by John Cleese, Michael Palin and Eric Idle.”
And she joked she was glad she wasn’t in the bath when her house fell to bits. She said: “I’d have been open to the world.”
Joyce believes the bitter winter cold has taken its toll on her 17th century home.
She said: “This has been a terrible winter and with the house being made of sandstone it just seems to have crumbled.
“The house is fixable but it will take time. I’m only on a pension and I’m frightened to ask the cost.”
Local builder James Innes, who has been clearing the rubble and debris from Joyce’s garden, said: “I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s going to take days to clear.”
Huyton Council has boarded up the gaping hole in Joyce’s home and sealed off her lane.
A spokesman added: “The building remains dangerous but building standards officers are satisfied the work needed to secure it is being carried out.”
