In Stairways
For all stairways, check lighting, handrails, and the condition of the steps and coverings.
Lighting
- Each step, especially the edge steps should be lighted so they can be clearly seen while going up and down the stairs. Ensure there is no glare or shadows along the stairway.
- Use the highest allowed wattage bulb for your light fitting
- If glare is a problem use a frosted bulb or indirect lighting or lamp shades.
- Make sure a qualified person fits the light
- Have electric switches fitted at the top and bottom of the stairs
Steps
- Ensure each step allows secure footing
- Loose carpeting and worn treads can lead to insecure footing
- Avoid wearing slippers, socks or smooth soled shoes whilst in the stairs
- Consider painting the outside step with a paint with a rough texture or use abrasive strips
- Steps should all be the same size and height
- Ensure the edges of each step can be clearly seen
- Avoid carpets with a thick pile or dark in colour
- Make sure the stairway is always free of objects lying around
- Consider having a stairlift fitted

New Stairlift vs Reconditioned Stair Lifts
A stairlift is not a product anyone buys everyday and they can be an expensive investment so we have put together some pros and cons of both new and reconditioned stairlifts to help you choose what stairlift will be right for you
Advantages of a Reconditioned Stairlift
The main advantage is obviously the price. A reconditioned stairlift will usually be much cheaper than a brand new stairlift. At One Stop Mobility we offer great reconditioned stairtlifts at great prices. All our reconditioned stairlifts are less than 3 years old.
Disadvantages of a Reconditioned Stairlift
In many ways, buying a secondhand stair glide can be as reliable as buying a new one. However, there are a number of disadvantages that you need to be aware of.
1. It virtually impossible to find secondhand curved track for a stairlift as they need to be bespoke made to fit the flight of stairs. However we can offer you a bespoke made track with a reconditioned chair which greatly reduces the cost.
2. Buying a used stairlift from anyone other than a reputable stairlift company is dangerous as if there is a problem with the stairlift there will be no after service.
3. Faults are more common in used models. If your supplier has not provided a comprehensive warranty this can be expensive. However experience has lead us to fitting only the most reliable models on the market to minimise this risk.
6. Finding replacement parts for secondhand models can be difficult, especially if the model is no longer available. This is why at One Stop mobility we only fit the latest stairlift model, never more than 3 years old.
Overview
If you are going to buy a reconditioned stair lift make sure you buy it from a reputable stairlift dealer. Make sure the stairlift comes with a comprehensive warranty. Also make sure the stairlift has been rigorously checked and all worn parts have been replaced.
